Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared last Wednesday that the spread of monkeypox in Africa has become a global health emergency, countries have intensified their preparations to confront the disease.
In this context, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Health, announced the ministry's measures to detect any monkeypox cases, emphasizing the activation of emergency protocols and the strengthening of preventive health measures at land, sea, and air ports.
During a phone interview on a TV program, Abdel Ghaffar stated that no cases of monkeypox have been recorded in Egypt so far, as a result of ongoing surveillance at all entry points.
He pointed out that these measures were taken in response to the WHO's declaration that monkeypox, now known as "M Pox," is a global health emergency of concern. The WHO had earlier warned of the possibility of imported cases appearing in Europe, after Sweden announced its first detected case of the disease.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also called on affected countries, through his account on the platform "X," to collaborate in combating the virus, enhance surveillance, share data, and better understand the disease's transmission, while also sharing tools like vaccines.
It is noteworthy that the disease has claimed at least 548 lives in Congo since the beginning of the year, due to a more contagious and dangerous strain of the virus.
